Pixelwerx supported CarMax with a bold skyway advertising takeover in downtown Minneapolis, producing and installing large-format graphics designed to surround viewers throughout a high-traffic interior space.
The campaign used multiple surfaces throughout the skyway environment — including walls, glass, railings, escalator areas, and elevated architectural features — to create a bright, immersive brand presence for CarMax. The result was a temporary installation that felt continuous, highly visible, and integrated into the surrounding space.

CarMax wanted more than a single ad placement. The goal was to create a takeover that would dominate the skyway environment and surround viewers with campaign graphics as they moved through the space.
The location created several technical challenges. Graphics needed to be installed across stone, glass, drywall, railings, and elevated architectural areas. Each surface required the right material so the graphics would adhere properly during the campaign but remove cleanly when the promotion ended.
Height was another factor. Some areas could not be safely accessed by ladder, so lift equipment was needed to reach elevated graphics and complete the installation correctly.
Pixelwerx began with a detailed site review to understand the space, surfaces, access points, and removal requirements.
Because the skyway included multiple surface types, our team evaluated which films would perform best for each application. Adhesion testing helped confirm that materials would hold securely for the campaign without damaging the building during removal.
Technical drawings and measurements were also critical. Pixelwerx documented surface dimensions, transitions, and viewing angles so the campaign artwork could be produced and installed accurately across the space.
The graphics were solvent printed and laminated for protection during the two-month campaign. During installation, Pixelwerx coordinated lift access for elevated areas and managed application across the varied surfaces so the campaign felt cohesive throughout the skyway.
The finished CarMax skyway takeover created a bold, immersive campaign presence in downtown Minneapolis.
Large-format graphics wrapped the environment with CarMax messaging, photography, and brand color. The campaign appeared across walls, glass, railings, escalator areas, and elevated surfaces, giving the space a strong sense of visual impact without relying on one single placement.
After the campaign ended, Pixelwerx returned to remove the graphics cleanly and restore the space to its original appearance.
This project worked because the execution matched the ambition of the campaign.
A skyway takeover requires planning for surface compatibility, color consistency, installation access, temporary durability, and clean removal. Every material choice and installation detail had to support both the visual impact of the campaign and the condition of the building after the promotion ended.
By combining site surveying, technical drawings, material testing, large-format production, lift-supported installation, and careful removal, Pixelwerx helped CarMax create a campaign that felt immersive, polished, and complete from every angle.
